Why Lowline Cattle?

Lowline Cattle are an incredibly versatile breed that are renowned for their gentle temperaments and ease of handling, making them perfect for those just starting out and/or wanting young children to be involved in the herd. They are also famous for outstanding meat quality and yield relative to their size, whilst being incredibly economical to run as they require less space per animal than larger breeds. For more, check out our Benefits section.

Aren’t Lowlines just dwarf Angus Cattle?

Australian Lowlines were developed from a closed herd of Aberdeen Angus cattle and are the result of selective breeding over many years starting in the 1930's at the NSW Department of Primary Industries Trangie Research facility, with the aim of developing an animal that was most efficient converter of grass to meat. The result was a breed of cattle that had a lower yearling growth rate (Low line) yet offered meat that was highly competitive in both quality & quantity.

Because today’s Australian Lowlines came from such a select group, the genetics of each individual animal are closely documented and confirmed by DNA testing for registration. They do not carry the Achondroplasia (dwarfism) gene, but are in fact bred specifically to be 60% of the size of a standard Aberdeen Angus.

You can read more about the history & development of the Australian Lowline via the Australian Lowline Cattle Association website.
